#3 - My Office

Didn't get out of the office much at all today, so I figured that this would be as good of a time as any to show off my office.. Notice the phone in the bottom left corner of the picture? That's a Shoretel VOIP phone. I've been working on learning about setting up Shoretel systems and so far it's been incredibly easy. I set up the system in a test environment with virtual servers a couple of days ago. Today I set up the whole system (including connecting to trunks and installing server 2003) in just over 3 1/2 hours. I'm excited to be able to work with this stuff. Making a phone call to another extension for the first time on a system that I set up was pretty awesome... I can't imagine what it felt like when Alexander Graham Bell made his first phone call. I didn't even invent this system and it was amazing to make the first phone call from it lol...

Voip is a happenin' field. Are your switches POE, or do you have adapters on the phones?

Glad to see you back in the daily photoblog biz. Keep up the good work!

Yeah, it's pretty exciting getting to work with this stuff.. It's so incredibly simple to setup.. I've heard that cisco voip systems are no where near as easy or as cost-effective to set up.. As a matter of fact, check this out..

Yeah the switch is PoE, which has actually proven to make things more difficult in our situation because we have 2 offices (suites) in the same building but they are separated by 3 or 4 suites.. That means that getting my office wired with enough network cables for 2 phones, 2 computers, a printer and an extra connection for working on computers will require running at least 4 cables... The phones have a built in pass-thru that also has some QoS settings that allow voice to take priority over data... We could just either put another switch in that office and use adapters for the phones (or use another PoE switch) but I think my boss intends on just getting the cables run..

Thanks for the comments!
